Canal + and French cinema reach agreement on media chronology

The Canal + group, historic financier of the seventh art, and the representatives of French cinema announced, Thursday, December 2, that they had managed to agree on the hot topic of the media chronology.

This governs the dates on which films can be shown, online and on television in particular, in the months following their theatrical release. These rules, which must protect creation, have been the subject of intense negotiations since the rise of streaming platforms, which are game-changing.

The agreement announced Thursday is an important step but it does not end the match: signed between the pay channel and French cinema organizations, it could extend “Until at least 2024” the partnership between the two parties, said a press release. It provides a “Guaranteed investment of more than 600 million euros for the next three years in French and European cinema for Canal + and Ciné +”.

In exchange, Canal +, which must now face competition from the major streaming platforms, could broadcast the films just six months after their theatrical release, and exclusively for at least nine months.

In fact, the next step is to tune in with video-on-demand platforms, like Netflix, which have turned the market upside down and are also demanding a better position in the media timeline, in exchange for their creation funding obligations.
