Canal+ launches TV+, a competitor to Molotov at 2 euros per month


Faced with the evolution of TV consumption (more and more people do not have a box or access to DTT), the Canal group announces TV+, a new low-cost offer which gives access to 80 channels live and in replay, but not the Canal+ channels. Its goal is to offer an alternative to people who only use connected devices.

From Wednesday May 22, the myCANAL application, available on most operating systems (iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Android TV, Tizen, LG webOS, Apple tvOS, PlayStation, Xbox, etc.), welcomes a new subscription type. The offer TV+marketed at a single price of 2 euros per month, allows non-Canal+ subscribers to access a modern TV experience without having to subscribe to Canal+.

In Le Figaro, Christophe Pinard-Legry, the general director of Canal+ France in charge of business, explains that he wants to address the changing uses. More and more people are consuming television differently and are tired of switching from one application to another. TV+ wants to consolidate Canal’s place as “super aggregator”.

What does the TV+ offer offer for 2 euros per month?

Ironically, TV+ is a sort of Canal+ offer without access to Canal+.

The service includes all the functionalities of myCANAL, namely live access, live control, replay and downloading of content. However, the channels offered are different. We have to make do with the TNT channels (including those of the TF1 and M6 groups, with whom Canal has often been angry), 25 thematic channels (like RTL9, Paris Première, MTV, Euronews, BFM Business or Comédie+) and some “digital” channels, such as Jamel Comedy Club TV or Clique TV. In total, 80 channels are offered, for 1 simultaneous user.

Canal+ regularly plans to offer its TV+ subscribers premium content, which it usually reserves for its subscribers to classic offers. Are notably cited by Le Figaro Florence Foresti’s last show, the series Black Baron And Tokyo Vice or football matches. The idea is to attract people to more expensive offers, with first introductions to the Canal+ universe. The group is accustomed to this and regularly publishes entire episodes of series on YouTube, to attract a new audience.

At 2 euros per month without commitment, the TV+ offer directly attacks Molotov.tv and its Extra offer, at 6.99 euros per month. At this price, Molotov offers 100 channels and streaming on 4 screens, in addition to a cloud recording functionality that is unique to it. Canal is banking on a more traditional replay, at the discretion of the channels.

The Canal group in turn anticipates the end of boxes

With TV+, Canal responds in a certain way to Free, Orange and SFR, which are also launching applications to replace decoders on connected televisions. The public who have fled traditional TV is its target, since Canal offers a single super-app to access all the programs usually broadcast on boxes or in several applications (TF1+, M6+, France.tv, etc.)

For the general director of Canal+ France, “ Canal+ aims to be the single entry point into content “. It is for this reason in particular that its Ciné Séries offer mixes Canal+, Netflix, Disney+, Max and Apple TV+.

At 2 euros per month, TV+ hopes to do the same thing in the world of classic channels, with a low price to permanently get rid of its decoder and improve the experience. Canal’s challenge is the arrival of operators on this market, who also offer complete (and sometimes free) applications.
