  • According to media reports, the large-scale failures in train traffic in northern Germany are due to sabotage.
  • The responsible security authorities have started investigations, various media report, citing Deutsche Bahn.
  • In the north of Germany there were no long-distance trains on Saturday morning. There are still handicaps.

Almost all train traffic in Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein had been stopped on Saturday morning. Long-distance trains from Berlin to North Rhine-Westphalia and from there further south were also affected. Many passengers were stranded at the train stations due to the disruption. Connections abroad were also lost.

Several media and news agencies quoted a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn. Accordingly, the large-scale failures in train traffic in northern Germany are due to sabotage. “Due to sabotage of cables, which are indispensable for train traffic, Deutsche Bahn had to stop train traffic in the north for almost three hours this morning,” said a railway spokeswoman on Saturday of the German Press Agency. The security authorities had started investigations.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing told Reuters that train services had been paralyzed in two places by a malicious attack. “We know that the cables were deliberately cut at two different locations in Germany,” said the FDP politician on Saturday. “It is clear that this is a targeted and willful approach.” However, the background to the crime is not yet known. The federal police are investigating.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the technical fault has now been resolved, but there are still disruptions to rail traffic. Train and stop cancellations and delays are to be expected.
