After the resignation of Simonetta Sommaruga, some names of candidates are already doing the rounds – men are out.

The announcement of Simonetta Sommaruga’s resignation also came as a surprise to the SP. The party has just under a month to nominate candidates. But it is clear that a woman must be elected. «We are the party of equality. We have had dual representation of men and women in the Federal Council for years and want to continue to do so,” stressed Co-President Mattea Meyer. She has already taken herself out of the race.

All candidates from all language regions would be accepted, said SP faction leader Roger Nordmann. The SP parliamentary group and party leadership wants to propose an election ticket with two women to the Federal Assembly by November 27th. The by-election will take place on December 7th. The SP should be able to hold the second seat in the Bundesrat, because the Greens and Green Liberals refrain from attacking.

The Basel State Councilor and former government councilor is currently the biggest favorite for Sommaruga’s successor Eva Herzog called. She was Basel’s Finance Director for fourteen years and has been a member of the Council of States since 2019. Herzog does not rule out a candidacy, as confirmed by the Keystone-SDA agency. But she couldn’t say any more at the moment. For Herzog, however, it would be high time for a Federal Council representative from Northwestern Switzerland.

Another favorite is the Jura Council of States Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. She was director of education in the canton of Jura for thirteen years. In the Council of States, she has chaired the important Environment and Energy Commission since 2019. She didn’t want to comment just yet.

Another favorite is the Bernerin Flavia Waterfalls called. The former Co-General Secretary of the SP has been in the National Council since 2018. There was no comment from her on a candidacy.

The SP candidates for the Federal Council election

Ueli Maurer will also be replaced in the Federal Council elections on December 7th. The crown favorite is Albert Rösti, who comes from the canton of Bern. This could be to the detriment of the potential Bernese candidates. Government councilor could also get into the race Evi Alleman. However, she remained vague towards Keystone-SDA: «I have never specifically asked myself the question of a Federal Council candidacy. In March I was re-elected as a government councilor and I am very happy to be involved in this task.»

For the Bernese National Councilor Nadine Masshardt candidacy is out of the question at this point in time. An executive office would irritate her, she told Keystone-SDA on request. “But with the best will in the world, I can’t imagine the office of Federal Councilor with the necessary round-the-clock availability,” she explained.

With Alain Berset (SP) and Guy Parmelin (SVP), two French-speaking Swiss are already on the Federal Council. Question to SRF Federal House Editor Natalie Christen: How realistic is a Latin Federal Councilor?

“It’s quite possible that a French woman will end up on the SP ticket. But at the moment, I think it’s rather unlikely that the parliament that will vote at the end will choose a woman from French-speaking Switzerland. In this case, Romandy and Ticino would form a majority in the Federal Council. I don’t think Parliament would want that as long as there was a good German-Swiss candidacy.”

Also the name of the former Bernese city councilor and national councillor Ursula Wyss and the former Aargau Councilor Pascale Bruderer and have fallen.

The National Councilor responded to a request from the Keystone-SDA agency Priska Seiler-Graf (ZH) concerned about Sommaruga’s resignation. She must first organize her thoughts and think about them in peace. Seiler-Graf is currently aiming for a seat in the Zurich cantonal government.

The same applies to Jacqueline Fehrwho is seeking re-election to the governing council. Fehr was already a candidate in 2010, but lost to Sommaruga at the time.

Also the St. Gallen National Councilor Barbara Gysi aims to succeed Paul Rechsteiner, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

Other candidates are emerging in Latin Switzerland: the Vaud State Councilor and former National Councilor Rebecca Ruiz (Health Director) and the President of the Vaud Council of State Nuria Gorrite.

In Ticino could state councilor Marina Carobbio Guscetti register interest.

Co-President Cédric Wermuth said on Wednesday that it was conceivable for him that two Social Democrats from Latin Switzerland could be represented in the Federal Council.
