Cannes 2018: All the news and pictures from the film festival

Cannes 2019
From May 14th to 25th, the stars will again make a pilgrimage to the Cote d’Azur to enjoy red carpets and expensive parties and to stroll under palm trees. The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most important events in the industry. This year, the jury will be chaired by the film producer and three-time Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu. Of course we will again collect the most beautiful pictures, the best stories and the most exciting star moments from the Croisette for you!
Alongside the MET Gala, the Cannes Film Festival is the biggest star event in May.
The organizers are already expecting a huge cast of stars for the opening film of the 72nd film festival. This year, independent director Jim Jarmusch will present his zombie film “The Dead Don’t Die”. Stars like Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Adam Driver and Iggy Pop appear on the red carpet. The film will also take part in the competition for the coveted Golden Palm. But there are also some real highlights outside of the competition. Nobody less than pop star Elton John appears for the premiere of his biopic “Rocketman” on the Cote d’Azur.
Who will win the Golden Palm?
The most important prize in the international competition is the “Golden Palm”. Last year the drama “Shoplifters – Familienbande” took the palm home with it.
An annually changing jury of filmmakers decides on the winner. In 2018, the Australian actress Cate Blanchett was the chair. This year, the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu (“The Revenant”) will take on this role. The 55-year-old has already received several film prizes himself. Among other things, he received three Oscars and two Golden Globes.
In addition, prizes such as the “Grand Jury Prize” and awards in various individual categories such as “Best Actor” are given. A winner has already been determined. The French actor Alain Delon, 83, (“The Swimming Pool”) receives the Palm of Honor for his life’s work.
Why Netflix is not in Cannes
There was great criticism in 2017 when the Netflix productions “The Meyerowitz Stories” and “Okja” took part in the competition in Cannes. Boos were loud during the screenings. The reason is the portal’s streaming policy. All films are immediately available on the website. Cinema films, on the other hand, have to compete in theatrical exploitation. Of course, flops are sold faster than hit productions. With Netflix, however, most films are permanently available.
Therefore, there has been a change in the statutes of the film festival since 2018. Every film that would like to be shown in Cannes must have previously had a theatrical release in France. Productions by Netflix, Amazon Prime and Co. are therefore excluded.
