Cannes 2022: what film does the sublime poster refer to?

After Spike Lee and “Nola Darling does as she pleases” in 2021, it’s another American film that inspired the sublime and ethereal poster for the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Did you recognize him?

Paramount Pictures/Hartland Villa

“Steps that journey towards revelation. A poetic celebration of the elusive and of freedom. An ascent to overlook the past and move forward towards the promise of renewal” : it is with these words that the Cannes Film Festival unveiled the magnificent poster for its 75th edition, which will be held from May 17 to 28.

If the character who climbs these steps and seems to float on the clouds is not as easily recognizable as the close-up of Spike Lee visible on 2021 posterit didn’t take long for moviegoers to identify The Truman Show.

And more precisely a key scene from the Peter Weir film carried by Jim Carrey and which prefigures the explosion of reality TV, since a man discovers there that he has been filmed 24 hours a day since his birth and that his life is broadcast live around the world: this moment that invites “the spectator to touch the border between reality and its representation as much as to question the powers of fiction, between manipulation and catharsis”as stated in the press release.

If you haven’t seen the movie: SPOILERS ALERT

Beyond the fact that the imagery of the Festival and that of The Truman Show come together and respond to each other, and allow Cannes to reaffirm “his conviction that art and cinema are places of reflection and contribute to the reinvention of the world”, many Internet users are asking themselves the following question: what if this poster announced the presence of Jim Carrey on the jury? Response in the coming days.
