Cannes Film Festival: 2.5 million viewers watching the closing ceremony

The closing ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, broadcast on Saturday on France 2, brought together an average of 2.49 million viewers live, less than in 2023, according to data published on Sunday by Médiamétrie. Presented by Camille Cottin, the ceremony, broadcast earlier than last year – from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. and not from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. – however gained an audience share of 20.8%, “a historic record” according to France Télévisions after 20% last year.

The public group congratulated itself in a press release on having “shared and celebrated with everyone the largest film festival in the world”. Brut, another media partner of the festival, recorded more than 600 million videos viewed on all platforms, also a high point.

2.3 million viewers for the opening ceremony

In 2023, 3.16 million viewers followed the event, which had already been hailed as a “record” by France Télévisions and Brut. The ceremony also recorded more than 500 million views on social networks.

On May 14, the opening ceremony of the 77th edition set another record, with 2.3 million viewers on France 2 and france.tv. France Télévisions and Brut became official broadcasters of the Cannes competition in 2022, replacing Canal+.

During the ceremony on Saturday, the Palme d’Or, the most prestigious prize of the competition, was awarded to a representative of the new American independent cinema, Sean Baker, for his film “Anora”.
