Canon launches two kit zooms to accompany its new APS-C hybrids

Canon launches a range of optics to accompany its new hybrids with APS-C sensors on RF mount. These are two kit zooms.

Canon is going APS-C on its RF mount. The EF-M mount was soon to be abandoned, so it was necessary to produce new lenses to accompany the launch of the EOS R7 and R10. If the latter are completely compatible with the firm’s 24×36 RF lenses, Canon wanted to equip them with more compact and accessible kit zooms.

A very versatile zoom

We therefore discover the RF-S (as on the SLRs of yesteryear with the EF-S) 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM. It is an ultra versatile 29-240 mm zoom in 24 x 36 equivalent, with a sliding aperture, but nevertheless equipped with optical stabilization. It remains of a fairly small size with its 8.5 cm long for 7 cm in diameter and 310 g. It does not benefit from an all-weather construction. Its optical formula is based on 17 elements divided into 13 groups and its diaphragm has seven blades. The minimum focusing distance is 22 cm at the widest angle and 40 cm at full zoom.

A small all-purpose “pebble”

The second zoom is the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM. More modest, this 29-72 mm in 24 x 36 equivalent is also equipped with the mechanical stabilization of the sensor. It is a very compact deployable zoom lens: 4.4 cm long, 7 cm in diameter and only 130 g. It also does not have weather protection. Its optical construction uses a formula of seven elements divided into seven groups. The diaphragm has seven blades; the focusing distance is 22 cm at 18 mm and 32 cm at 45 mm.
