The fire brigade, which responded shortly after 5 p.m., found part of the two stables fully ablaze, the St. Gallen cantonal police said. An adjacent residential building was not affected by the fire. According to current findings, the fire broke out in the larger stable. The fire in one of the two stables was under control around 6 p.m.

Two stables were affected, in which there were a total of around 1,500 pigs. All people were able to leave the stables independently and uninjured. One stable was completely burned out and the roof collapsed. Around 800 pigs died in the fire.

The other stable was protected from fire, according to the St. Gallen cantonal police. However, he was exposed to very, very large amounts of smoke for a long time. Thanks to the fire department’s mechanical supply of fresh air, the around 90 mother pigs and around 600 piglets inside were saved. According to those responsible, there were around 1,500 pigs of different ages in the pig breeding operation.

Difficult extinguishing work

Due to the shortage of water, extinguishing work was difficult and pipes had to be laid for the extinguishing water.

In addition to police specialists, the fire department with around 100 members and the rescue service with medical specialists were on duty. The emergency services were supported by veterinarians and animal specialists.
