Canton of Zurich vote – Yes to runway extension at Zurich Airport almost certain – News

  • An initial projection by the Canton of Zurich predicts a clear yes to the extension of two runways at Zurich Airport.
  • According to forecasts, a good percent would agree to the proposal. 77 of Zurich’s 174 communities are counted.
  • According to projections, the trend can no longer tip into a no. It assumes a yes vote share of at least 55 percent.

Zurich Airport can therefore probably extend runway 28 by 400 meters to the west and runway 32 by 280 meters to the north. The airport itself bears the costs of 250 million francs. The cause was supported by, among others, the Zurich government and the civil parties.

During the voting campaign, they particularly emphasized the security aspect. Because the runway extension would allow all aircraft types to land and take off on all runways, there would be fewer unplanned runway changes and intersections.

Proponents also hope that flight operations will be more stable and punctual. Residents could also benefit from this. Thanks to shorter taxi times, heavy long-haul aircraft could take off earlier in the evening and night rest periods could be better observed.

The SP, Greens and AL are against the proposal. The GLP has decided to release votes. They don’t believe that the airport wants to spend 250 million francs without handling more flights. The extension of the runways is harmful to the environment and leads to more flight movements and more noise.

Because large aircraft then land on runway 28, residents in the east of the airport would be more affected by noise, while those in the south would be less affected.
