The famous Canyon brand updates its catalog of electric bikes by completely renewing its Pathlite range. Here are the Pathlite:ON Superlight (available in three versions), especially designed for trekking and adventure, but not necessarily incompatible with the city.
Canyon is a manufacturer of muscle bikes and electric bikes that really needs no introduction. Renowned above all for its road bikes, the German brand has also taken the turn towards electric bikes in recent years. We also tested their latest urban model, the Canyon Precede:ON Comfort 7, which convinced us in more than one way.
At the start of 2024, Canyon is shaking up its catalog and updating its entire Pathlite range, we learn in a press release sent to the editorial staff. Two families of Pathlite coexist in the catalog: the Superlight on one side (3 versions), the SUV on the other (6 versions). This article focuses on the first named, composed of the Pathlite:ON 8 Superlight, Pathlite:ON 6 Superlight and Pathlite:ON 4 Superlight.
Bosch’s latest engine on the menu
All three available in high and mid-high frames, this trio is intended above all for adventure and long escapades as part of a cycle touring trip for example. It’s sort of their favorite terrain. They nonetheless remain very well equipped for the city. In short, these are versatile cycles.
This range shares several points in common, starting with the famous Bosch Performance Line SX motor. It is the lightest in the Bosch range (2 kg), without sacrificing performance (55 Nm of torque). By combining it with a 400 Wh battery, this allows their weight to be reduced as much as possible: versions 8, 6 and 4 are respectively 17.2, 21.4 and 21.2 kg, which is very reasonable given their equipment.
Their tires are also identical: 29-inch Schwalbe G-One Speed, which should provide very good grip on the ground. For comfort, each iteration is entitled to an Essenza Athletic saddle.
Different transmissions
The two more affordable models (those numbered 4 and 6) are similar in every way, with a few exceptions. Their price difference of 300 euros – 2699 euros and 2999 euros – lies in the transmission: a 10-speed Shimano Cues for the first, a 12-speed Shimano Deore XT for the second.
The Pathlite:ON 6 Superlight also benefits from a better front headlight with a Supernova Mini 2 Pro. Its saddle is also suspended, to increase comfort. For the rest, nothing differentiates them: Suntour NCX suspension fork with 63 mm travel, Shimano MT 200 hydraulic disc brakes, Alex MD23 rims and luggage rack compatible with MIK HD and QL3 bindings, to attach a front seat by example.
The Bosch ecosystem at the heart of bicycles
At 3,699 euros, the Pathlite:ON 8 is based on a rigid fork from Canyon, which should have a negative impact on comfort. Here you have a sportier bike, which ignores any luggage rack. Its Shimano Deore XT 12-speed transmission is this time associated with Magura MT Thirty brakes and Alex GX26P rims.
Obviously, all Bosch components are Smart System compatible: this means that they can receive updates remotely, but also benefit from very practical security functions to be obtained from the eBike Flow mobile application.
