Gal Gadot did it in “Wonder Woman”, Brie Larson followed suit in “Captain Marvel”. Now the heroine storms free TV for the first time.

DC had a real hit in 2017 with “Wonder Woman”. The strip with Gal Gadot (36, “Justice League”) in the leading role has earned over 820 million US dollars (around 720 million euros) worldwide. A clear sign that female superheroes are in demand. Competitor Marvel followed suit a little later, in March 2019. Oscar winner Brie Larson (31, “Space”) plays the role of the eponymous female superhero in “Captain Marvel”. A premiere for the successful film studio, which will finally find its way onto free TV on September 26th (8:15 pm, ProSieben).

The flick is set in the 1990s, before the previous Marvel flicks like “Iron Man”, “Thor” or “Avengers: Infinity War”. At a time when the future SHIELD boss Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, 72) has no idea of the existence of superheroes. How does Brie Larson fit into the superhero squad? Can she convince as Captain Marvel? Is it credibly resolved where she has been hanging around in all this time? Here are the answers.

The story of “Captain Marvel”

To reproduce the plot of “Captain Marvel” without revealing spoilers is not easy. Because even a small detail could reduce the film experience. So much can be revealed: The film explains how Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) got her powers. It also explains why it has not yet appeared. The plot also has a few twists and turns. Who is friend, who is enemy? Carol Danvers gets more than one surprise.

Brie Larson is shaking up the Marvel universe

“Captain Marvel” is slowly igniting. In the first 15 to 20 minutes, the spark does not want to jump over immediately. However, this is not due to a bad implementation or the actors, but rather the somewhat confusing clarification that leads to the origin of the story. It quickly becomes clear: This is a slightly different superhero stiff, but one that is no less convincing than its predecessor. It contains a lot of action, cool stunts and a super heroine that the bad guys have to watch out for.

An advantage for superhero fans who do not know and want to see all previous Marvel flicks: You can enjoy “Captain Marvel” without prior knowledge. It could be that you can classify a few swipes better if you are familiar with the other films, but that shouldn’t bother anyone. The strength of the film lies in the cast and the thoroughly original story. Yes, aliens land on earth and Captain Marvel intervenes. But not everything is as it seems at the beginning.

Brie Larson is convincing all along the line. She is cheeky, stubborn, funny and wonderfully unpretentious, with a background story that is also touching. Who are you without memories and without a past? Carol Danvers is confronted with this. Her whole world turns upside down when she gets caught between two stools and has to weigh up between friend and foe. But she doesn’t let herself get down and stands up for her principles.

Perfect duo

The chemistry between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson couldn’t be better. Their verbal exchanges make for more than a laugh. Nick Fury has never been this funny. Above all, he still has both eyes – that will also be cleared up. As a rejuvenated version of his character, Jackson cuts a fine figure and who would have thought Fury was such a cat fanatic? Goose, the hairy four-legged friend, steals the show from the actors more than once.

The cast also features Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Annette Bening and Lashana Lynch. The latter is not only allowed to prove her skills as a pilot, but also forms a perfect counterpart to Larson. Jude Law clearly enjoys his opaque role, while Ben Mendelsohn gives his character Talos an unusually large amount of depth. Aliens can laugh at themselves, who would have thought?

“Captain Marvel” takes the viewer back to the 1990s, and the film also provides the appropriate soundtrack. There is real nostalgia. The one or the other clearing up of the burning Marvel questions may make you smile, but that doesn’t detract from the movie experience or the rest of the Marvel universe. It feels more like the missing piece of the puzzle has finally been found. The flick lives up to both its predecessors and its female superhero.

Conclusion:

Brie Larson is a born superhero. “Captain Marvel” might not fit into Marvel history as a classic superhero flick, but that’s exactly what makes it so good. The film brings a breath of fresh air and is a lot of fun.
