Captain Marvel: why did Brie Larson twice refuse the role of the superheroine?

Did you know that Brie Larson almost never portrayed Captain Marvel on the big screen? The American actress has indeed refused the role twice!

Since 2018, Brie Larson has played the superheroine Captain Marvel on the big screen. But the American actress almost never slipped into the character’s costume, since she refused the role twice before finally accepting the offer!

“I remember getting a call from my team when I was filming Kong: Skull Island. They told me that Marvel would like me to play this heroine”says Brie Larson in 2020 on his Youtube channel. “I thought I couldn’t do this. I had too much anxiety. It was too much for me. I didn’t think I could handle it.”

Brie Larson, then recently Oscar winner for her performance in Room, therefore asks her team to notify Marvel of their refusal, but the studio returns to the charge a few months later. “They called back. My team asked me, ‘Are you really sure of yourself?’ me. It was beyond my comprehension”continues the actress.

Scalded twice, Marvel still tries its luck a third time but because, as Larson explains, his team had not really closed the door. “Every time I said no to them, I thought they would then say no to Marvel, but actually not at all. I think they were doing that because they thought I would be great in the role.”notes the American.

Brie Larson eventually accepts Marvel’s offer. Once the filming of Kong: Skull Island is complete, she meets the studio to discuss the film’s script and discover a model of the character. “I was very touched by what they were trying to do, by what they were talking about. It happened in a very gradual way”says the actress. “I was very surprised by the way they talked about feminism, how they dealt with it. There were only female screenwriters, one female director, as many female voices as possible.”

Brie Larson was officially announced as Captain Marvel in the summer of 2016. She will return to the character in July 2023 for the sequel, titled The Marvels.
