From April 1, 2024, you will no longer need to request and affix the green insurance sticker to your windshield.
In 2022, Bercy announced that it wanted to remove the green sticker indicating that the vehicle is well insured. This summer, Bruno Le Maire confirmed the information and specified that the changeover would soon take place. The Ministry of the Interior finally communicated the date on which it would disappear.
The end of fines for inadvertence?
It is therefore April 1, 2024 which will mark the end of the obligation of the green sticker on windshields. “No more fines because it’s not displayed on the windshield. No more lengthy paperwork. No more printing this sticker which has a significant ecological cost of nearly 1,200 tonnes of CO2 per year”reacted Bruno Le Maire on X.com.
The Minister of the Interior mentions “a common sense measure which constitutes an important step in the simplification and modernization of our insurance system”.
He specifies that motorists must of course continue to take out insurance, only the physical proof constituted by the green sticker will not be more relevant. Let us add that the insurance certificate will also no longer be necessary.
A database fed in real time
The information will be entirely dematerialized, which required the implementation of a new data file. “There was already a base, but it also had to be [le fichier, NDLR] contains all the insured people in real time »says the ministerial office, cited by The echoes. Responsibility lies with insurers, who must register their contracts in the database within a maximum of 72 hours.
As with doctors who must equip themselves to handle the dematerialized Vitale card, law enforcement will also see their tools modernized to adapt to the end of the physical format. Bercy assures that staff will be ready for the transition and that the new system will be more reliable than paper. In any case, it has already proven itself in other European countries.
Please note, if you are traveling outside the European Union, certain countries such as Morocco, Tunisia or Bosnia will still require the green sticker.
