Car of the Year – Hyundai takes triple victory at the World Car Awards

The title of World Car of the Year 2022 goes to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 – and more than that. The Korean electric coupe SUV has secured two more trophies at the prestigious award: for the best electric car and for the best car design of the year.

The Audi e-tron GT, which is also electric, was named World Performance Car of the Year, while the Mercedes EQS is World Luxury Car of the Year. A small car also won an award: the Toyota Yaris Cross was named World Urban Car of the Year. The jury for the global awards program consists of 102 renowned car journalists from 33 countries, including “Krone” motor editor Stephan Schätzl Ioniq 5 not only prevailed against 26 competitors as Car of the Year, but also against the technically very closely related Kia EV6, which nevertheless made it into the top 3 together with the Ford Mustang. Here, too, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 only managed fourth place. In the World Urban Car, the Toyota still came in second in reader voting, behind the Opel Mokka. The two also made the top 3 for the jury, together with the VW Taigun, which is not available in Europe Prestige Duel. In addition to the Genesis GV70, which is unknown in this country, BMW iX and Mercedes EQS fought for dominance in the top 3.
