car sick? Apple has found a miracle cure for iPhone owners


iOS 18, the next version of Apple’s operating system, will bring many new features. One of them should prove particularly useful for all car-sick users. Explanations.

Motion sickness is a widespread pathology. Also called motion sickness, it corresponds to a set of disorders that occur when traveling in a vehicle, whether by car, plane or boat. The symptoms are diverse and can range from nausea, cold sweats, dizziness to vomiting and headaches.

As you may know, motion sickness is caused by an inappropriate brain response. More precisely, it is an opposition between the information provided by the eyes, and that given by the vestibule, the organ of balance located in the inner ear. To put it simply, the eyes see movement (the road passing by, the turns taken in the car, etc.), while the vestibule judges that the body is not moving.

Apple has a solution to limit travel sickness

The symptoms mentioned above can also be triggered by reading in a car, playing on your portable console or using your smartphone. With iOS 18, the next version of its operating system, Apple has thought of iPhone owners affected by motion sickness.

In a recent blog article, the Apple brand detailed some of the new features coming with iOS 18. The Voice Memos application will, for example, have a new look and will be able to offer real-time transcriptions of audio recordings. We also know that Eye Tracking will be included with iOS 18. Thanks to this tool, users with physical disabilities will be able to use their eye movements to navigate on their iPhone or iPad.

But what interests us here is Vehicle Motion Clues. According to the Cupertino company, this feature will limit passengers’ motion sickness when they use their iPhone in a moving vehicle. To do this, Vehicle Motion Clues displays animated dots at the edges of the screen to materialize changes in vehicle speed.

For example, in a straight line, the points will scroll from top to bottom on your iPhone screen. When turning, points will cross the screen from left to right or vice versa depending on the direction. When braking, they will stabilize on the edges. According to Apple, the feature takes advantage of the sensors built into the iPhone and iPad to identify vehicle movements and react accordingly. Note that it will be possible to configure Vehicle Motion Clues in order to that it activates automatically on your iPhone. You can also turn it on or off manually through Control Center on your device.
