Carbios: innovates in the biorecycling of polyester

(Boursier.com) — Carbios today inaugurated its textile preparation line within its industrial demonstrator in Clermont-Ferrand in the presence of Mr. Lescure, Minister Delegate in charge of Industry.

To streamline the essential step of textile preparation, currently carried out mainly by hand or on several lines, Carbios has developed an integrated and automated line allowing, from used clothing or production scraps, to produce textile waste capable of being depolymerized with its enzymatic biorecycling process. This patented line integrates all the preparation stages (shredding and extraction of hard points such as buttons or closures), and provides Carbios with an efficient and scalable development tool.

The line will contribute to validating textile biorecycling technology at industrial demonstrator scale (by 2024), and gives Carbios expertise with collection and sorting stakeholders to specify the quality of textiles and the stages of preparation necessary to make them suitable for enzymatic recycling. This expertise will also be valuable for brands in the eco-design of their products.

Currently, the sorting and preparation of textiles is essentially done by hand with low efficiency, particularly with regard to disruptions to recycling such as “hard points” (closures, buttons, etc.). In order to optimize this crucial process, Carbios contributes to a textile preparation solution to accelerate the development of biorecycling in the textile industry. Enzymatic recycling, or biorecycling, thus contributes to the construction of a textile recycling sector and the acceleration of “fiber to fiber” recycling, an approach strongly awaited by the major brands in the sector for, among other things, free from the use of used bottles.
