Carbios lays the first stone of its PET biorecycling plant, a world first, with its partners

(Boursier.com) — CARBIOS, a pioneer in the development and industrialization of biological technologies to reinvent the life cycle of plastics and textiles, today inaugurated the first PET biorecycling plant in the world in the presence of representatives of local authorities, partner brands and industrial partners who are part of the CARBIOS ecosystem.
Located in Longlaville, in the Grand-Est Region, CARBIOS’s first commercial factory will play a key role in the fight against plastic pollution, offering on an industrial scale a solution for the enzymatic depolymerization of PET waste in order to accelerate a circular economy for plastic and textiles. The plant will have a capacity of 50kt/year of prepared waste when operating at full capacity. The progress of the work is in accordance with schedule and significant quantities will be delivered to customers in 2026.

PET, the second most used plastic in the world, is currently mainly made from petroleum. Thanks to the enzymatic biorecycling technology developed by CARBIOS, PET will no longer come from oil exploitation, but from its own waste. This technological advance opens new recycling avenues for products such as multi-layer, colored and opaque trays from packaging waste and polyester textile waste that have until now been little or not recycled, thus giving them economic value. In addition, this advance positions France as a pioneer in green innovation, contributing to its reindustrialization and its leadership in the transition to a sustainable economy.
