- The USA wants to help the technology for the storage of carbon dioxide to achieve a breakthrough with a multi-billion dollar subsidy program.
- As announced by the Department of Energy in Washington, several projects for the capture of CO2 from the air and its storage are to be funded with a total of 3.5 billion dollars.
- Capturing CO2 from industrial emissions, the air or the oceans has long been seen as an empty promise by industry to avoid stricter emission regulations.
In the meantime, however, they are also considered necessary by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in order to contain climate change to a tolerable extent. The technical challenge is to store large amounts of CO2 at low cost.
The four most important projects of the new US subsidy program should be able to separate and store at least one million tons of CO2 per year.
