Caritas raises the alarm – more and more Carinthians are affected by poverty

Caritas sounds the alarm! The record inflation has particularly serious consequences for people affected by poverty. 93,000 people in our federal state are already suffering from it – and the numbers continue to rise.

Whether on the electricity and heating bill or when shopping for groceries: Poor people in particular feel inflation particularly hard. The price avalanche hits them with full force. And that every day.New aid package from CaritasCaritas has therefore developed a new aid package for those affected in Carinthia. “Austria is one of the 15 richest countries in the world. Nevertheless, in Carinthia there are already 93,000 people at risk of poverty or exclusion,” warns Caritas director Ernst Sandriesser. The situation is getting worse and worseThis group includes people who have to make do with an income of up to 1,371 euros a month. “There are people who sit at home with three sweaters and have to put their groceries on the balcony because there is no refrigerator. We have to look at these people. The numbers are increasing rapidly. No donation is too small,” says Sandriesser. In the summer, as many people came to the three social counseling centers in Carinthia as usual in a year. “246,000 euros were paid out as aid. We were able to avert 40 evictions,” says Caritas division manager Christian Eile. Anyone can help poor people Caritas has set up a donation account, there are Wir-helfen shops where you can give families at risk of poverty a shopping basket. “These people turn every euro three times over. Caritas supplies 550 affected people with food. The waiting lists are getting longer and longer,” says Sandriesser. “The government helped. However, the help must become more socially accurate.”
