At just 19 years old, Carlos Alcaraz became this Monday the youngest world number 1 in the history of tennis after his victory in the final of the US Open on Sunday. At the microphone of Europe 1, Richard Gasquet, former French number 1, draws up the many qualities of the Spaniard, still unknown to the general public a few months ago.

It’s simply unheard of in the world of the little yellow ball. Carlos Alcaraz, 19, became the youngest world No. 1 in tennis history after winning the US Open on Sunday. A first Grand Slam title which comes very early in the Spaniard’s career but which does not surprise Richard Gasquet, former French number 1.

“It’s true that he’s very young. Winning the US Open and being the youngest world number 1 in history is quite incredible. But for the past few months, he had won a lot of tournaments and we knew that he would certainly be the best”, analyzes Gasquet. According to him, Alcaraz has all the weapons to dominate the circuit in the long term.

“I see him winning a lot of Grand Slams”

“I think he’s going to take over from Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. Over the next ten years, I really see Alcaraz winning a lot of Grand Slams.” For Richard Gasquet, the Spaniard can rely on a very solid game that has few weak points. “He knows how to do everything quite simply. He is very fast, he serves very well and he really only has qualities in his game and very few faults.

Carlos Alcaraz also has impressive physical skills, as Richard Gasquet points out. “He still made three matches in five sets in a row. Then the final was a very tough match,” points out the former 7th player in the world. Sunday evening in New York, the Alcaraz promise turned into confirmation.
