The board of directors of Carrefour will propose to its shareholders to extend until 2026 the mandate of its CEO Alexandre Bompard, in office since mid-2017, at the next general meeting of the group on May 26, according to a press release on Wednesday. Workforce reduction in Europe

He had arrived at the helm of the second player in distribution in France in terms of market share, behind the independent chain E.Leclerc, with a major challenge: to get back on its feet a giant with a shaken economic model, very present on the hypermarket format at a time when consumers are increasingly turning away from it. On the social front, the financial documentation of the group draws a double movement: the workforce is decreasing in Europe, but is expanding in South America, particularly in Brazil where Carrefour is an undisputed leader. In France, the trade unions accuse Alexandre Bompard of being the craftsman, with the transition of many businesses to lease-management, of a great plan of “store outsourcingwith heavy social consequences, which he defends himself against. On the economic level, Carrefour has announced for 2022 a turnover which increases by 16% to 90.8 billion euros, and a net profit which jumps to 1.35 billion euros, i.e. 26% better than the previous year.
