The “Bond” director Cary Fukunaga is certain: The image of men in the old “Bond” films does not fit into the present day.

The new Bond director Cary Fukunaga (44) spoke in an interview about the image of men and women that the films have long conveyed.

In a portrait of the “Hollywood Reporter” Fukunaga explains: “Was it ‘Thunderball’ or ‘Goldfinger’ where Sean Connery’s character basically raped a woman? She said ‘No, no, no’ and he said ‘Yes, yes, yes’. That wouldn’t work today . “

In fact, there are such questionable scenes in both films: In “Goldfinger” Bond grabs Pussy Galore brutally several times when she tells him that she is not interested and wants to leave. Ultimately, he throws himself at her and forces himself a long kiss with physical superiority. In “Thunderball”, too, Connerys Bond first forced himself on a spa employee and then blackmailed her with the fact that “his silence had a price”. She shakes her head and says “Oh no” whereupon he says “Oh yes”, pushes her into a sauna and undresses.

The first bond since #metoo

Just two of several “Bond” scenes that would cause an outcry today. Especially after the Harvey Weinstein (69) case and the hashtag #metoo triggered worldwide discussions about Hollywood’s image of women, the new Bond is under special observation.

The No Time To Die director explains his approach: “You can’t turn Bond into another person overnight. But you can definitely change the world around him and the way he has to function in this world.”

At Fukunaga’s suggestion, “Fleabag” author and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge (36) was finally brought into the writers’ room of the new “Bond” strip. Fukunaga says that while it is still about a white male spy, one still has to make sure that the “female characters are more than just decals.”
