Cat Day, or more formally International Cat Day, is celebrated worldwide on August 8th. Are you joining us?

Of course, cat lovers don’t actually need a Cat’s Day to celebrate their velvet four-legged friends. But International Cat Day can still be used as an opportunity to show the cat or hangover his love once more. Where the day of action comes from, what the initiators are about and how you can best enjoy this day – you can read that here.

Cat Day: August 8th is celebrated

Cat Day has been celebrated on August 8th since 2002. However, it is not really clear who started this day of action. Anyway, the reason for the appointment of an official International Cat Day is much more important than the question of its origin. After all, cat lovers and animal rights activists are not just interested in honoring their favorites. Rather, the day of the cat is intended to point out problems of four-legged friends and animal welfare. According to the animal welfare organization “peta”, among others, non-castrated and non-sterilized free-range animals pose a major problem, as they reproduce in an uncontrolled manner.

How do you celebrate Cat Day?

Of course, there are no fixed rituals for a day of action like Cat’s Day to spend the day in a dignified manner. We just thought about what a perfect day under the sign of your favorites could look like. Here are a few tips for you:

  • Cat content always works: How about a Selection of films and series that your cat should also like because of the hairy (supporting) actors? Maybe they’ll join you and enjoy a relaxed afternoon / evening with you. These are our favorites:
    • Aristocats: Disney’s Classic cat from 1970 still inspires the hearts of cat fans today. No wonder – in this story about the animal heirs of a great fortune, the animals are once again the “good guys”, while humans (in the form of the butler Edgar) show their worst side.
Tip: At Disney + you can stream this and many other Disney cult films with and without cats. Click here for the subscription.
    • Tom & Jerry: The two favorite enemies should of course not be missing from this list. How Tom and Jerry chase each other, play nasty pranks and in the end there can only be one winner, it never gets boring. Even if the cat loses out here. “FREINDschaft” really gets going in feature length.
    • Pettson and Findus: The Swedish children’s book series has also been adapted for the screen and brings the cat Findus and his master Pettson to life. Equally entertaining for two and four-legged friends.
    • Garfield: Are you also fans of lasagna? Then you should find or have found a best friend in Garfield. With Bill Murray as the speaker in the original and Thomas Gottschalk in the German version, the cozy cat got excellent votes. Both films are available at here.
    • Breakfast at Tiffany’s: The cat may only seem to play a minor role and yet it manages to compete alongside icon Audrey Hepburn. First someone should imitate her.
  • Make treats yourself: Treat your cat to a few small snacks once more. Here, too, we have two favorites that are very easy to implement:
    • Tuna treats – Simply drain canned tuna (approx. 150 grams), separate one egg and puree the egg yolk with the tuna. Beat the egg white until stiff and fold in. Bake at 160 degrees in a preheated oven for around 30 minutes.
    • Jerky meat – Cut any amount of meat into small pieces, spread out on a baking sheet and let dry at 40 degrees for six to eight hours. Leave the oven ajar, for example with a wooden spoon.
  • Tinker toys: If you want to get creative on Cat Day, just make a new toy for your animal roommate. You only need very few materials for this and the toys are usually made quickly.
    • Do you still have an empty chip box or a similar box ready? Then just fill in a few treats for the cat and seal them tightly. Cut small openings in the can with a craft knife and your cat can go on the hunt with rustling and clattering.
    • You could also tie some feathers to a stick or tie feathers to a string and use them to bait your cat. Just make sure that there is no risk of injury from the rod.

Are there any more cat days?

Of course there are! If you would rather celebrate your cat too often than too rarely, you can get the June 4th reserve. Then it is Hug your cat day – which of course you celebrate with a hug to your own cat.
