Gianluca Giess is a trained hairdresser. For a few weeks he has been the troop cook in the military kitchen.
Around 1,500 members of the military are fed three times a day at the Waffenplatz in Thun. Only a few of the almost 30 chefs have learned the trade. The rest is made up of a wide variety of professional groups, from carpenters to hairdressers, like Gianluca Giess is.

For the hairdresser, one thing is clear: During military service, he wants to acquire skills that will also help him in his profession as a hairdresser, such as being orderly or making sensible decisions.
Gianluca Giess’ day usually starts between three and six in the morning. Depending on whether he is assigned to prepare breakfast. He goes to bed around 11 p.m.

Shortly before the shift in the military kitchen, Gianluca Giess (on the right in the picture) and the other recruits have to line up.

Giess doesn’t really come to a boil that day. After each small task, the constable gives him the next one. It gives the impression that the untrained cooks are used as errand boys and hardly get to cook. Gianluca takes it with humor: “During my apprenticeship, I was trained to carry out tasks.”
