Catherine Davydzenka (Here it all begins): “I have been confronted with bulimia many times”

Hortense is a victim of eating disorders in Here it all begins (Monday to Friday at 6:30 p.m. on TF1). Its interpreter claims his pride in addressing the taboo of bulimia in a daily fiction.

Télé Star: After supporting Mehdi in illness, it’s Hortense’s turn to need him…

Catherine Davydzenka: Hortense is a victim of bulimia. She will indeed need Mehdi. Just like we did with bullying, the opportunity to champion this cause on screen is a gift to me.

Have you ever been confronted with this pathology?

It is a disease that I have faced many times in my personal life. I was able to see its complexity and the devastation it can cause within families. A friend of mine had to be hospitalized. It is extremely difficult to live with, both for those around them who feel guilty and for the person affected, struggling with a feeling of shame, even self-loathing.

Did you have to transform yourself physically?

As it was essential to play on the physical metamorphosis, I actually lost five kilos. Makeup artists also transformed my face by hollowing out my cheeks. It was crucial to stop being glamorous at all. I lived with another Hortense for a while and hope these efforts will help talk about bulimia.

By meeting you, we realize how much the character of Hortense is a pure composition. Does this give ideas for other productions?

I have had proposals which I have not followed up on for the moment. This composition work is often mentioned when talking about my character but, by definition, you must first meet me to realize the gap between me and Hortense! It’s already a chance to have been able to do it in a daily newspaper because, in general, the directors are looking for actors who correspond to the roles. Me, I want to play above all. If it is to interpret what I am, I already live it every day!
