A fatal leisure accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the area of the Mokarspitze near Dellach im Drautal (Carinthia) – a paraglider pilot from Switzerland had crashed.
Shortly after 12 noon on Tuesday, a 45-year-old paraglider from Switzerland took off from the Emberger Alm on a cross-country flight – first west towards Damerkopf, then back towards Greifenburg. However, the pilot crashed southwest of the Mokarspitze in the Kreuzeck group shortly after 2.30 p.m. The cause of the accident is still unclear. A paraglider pilot from Germany noticed the crash and immediately made an emergency call. The emergency doctor from the C7 rescue helicopter team could only confirm the death of the man, who had succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. The body was recovered by the C7 team. The relatives of the 45-year-old, who were waiting for him at a campsite, received help from the crisis intervention team. The Oberdrauburg police, members of the Spittal Alpine Task Force, the Upper Drautal Mountain Rescue Service and the Christophorus 7 crew were on duty. Numerous Carinthians and holidaymakers from all over Austria and the surrounding countries are always drawn to the Upper Drautal Valley because the conditions there are good for paragliding. Take-off and landing sites have been set up. Such serious accidents rarely occur in the Drautal Valley.
