  • At least four people have died in a major fire in the Spanish coastal metropolis of Valencia. Another 14 were injured.
  • The high-rise building with apartments has been largely destroyed.
  • According to the emergency services, the fire broke out in an apartment on the fourth floor and spread rapidly.

A neighbor from a nearby house told TV station RTVE that he saw two people on a balcony of the burning building asking for help. At least fourteen people, including six firefighters, were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation or burns, the newspaper La Vanguardia reported. At least four people were killed.

As a precaution, the authorities have set up a field hospital nearby. In addition, help was requested from soldiers from the UME military emergency relief unit to fight the flames, the state TV broadcaster RTVE reported. The UME is otherwise used in large forest fires. At least 20 people are still missing.

Social media showed how the facade of the relatively new building with 138 apartments burned from the ground floor to the flat roof. According to the rescue service, 16 fire engines were deployed. There was a huge cloud of black smoke above the building.

The high-rise complex is said to have been completed only a few years ago. It consists of several blocks with 138 apartments on up to 15 floors. The building was completely engulfed in flames in a very short time and at times resembled a huge torch. The fire broke out in an apartment on one of the lower floors and spread rapidly across the facade made of flammable materials and also because of strong winds, experts explained in Spanish media.
