Kunua! recalls the gold ears of protein toast rolls sold by Aldi because they contain ethylene oxide. Consumption is strongly discouraged.

Attention all Aldi customers. The Kunua! Handels-GmbH & Co. KG is currently recalling the gold ears of protein toast rolls sold by Aldi Süd. It’s specifically about them Protein toast rolls, 260g, 4 pieces – Products with best before dates 04/10/2022, 04/13/2022 and 04/27/2022.

What is ethylene oxide?

The recall came about because investigations revealed contamination with ethylene oxide (combination of 2-chloroethanol and ethylene oxide). It is a crop protection and fumigant used to combat fungi and bacteria. This substance is already banned in Germany, but due to imports from other countries, it also finds its way into our supermarkets again and again.

Consumption can be carcinogenic to humans. Due to the small amount contained, the one-time consumption is not too dangerous – nevertheless, a doctor should be consulted immediately in case of symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting or loss of consciousness.
