On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the first episode of The Witcher, CD Projekt RED has just made a major announcement! Indeed, the 1st opus of the cult saga of the Polish studio will return in a brand new remake based on the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine.
If you’re a fan of The Witcher and CD Projekt RED’s video game adaptations, you might know that the 1st opus celebrates on this Wednesday, October 26, 2022 its 15th anniversary. For the occasion, the Polish studio has great news to announce.
Indeed, the fathers of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher saga have just confirmed thata remake of the first opus is under development! According to CD Projekt, the game is currently in the early stages of development in the hands of Polish studio Fool’s Theory, founded in particular by veterans of The Witcher series. CD Projekt RED says it will provide full creative oversight for the project.

The Witcher will return in a remake under Unreal Engine 5
Note that we had already heard about the project under the code name “Canis Majoris”. Not long ago, CD Projekt RED confirmed they were working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and a new The Witcher trilogy. However, we also knew that two other The Witcher games, answering codenamed “Sirius” and “Canis Majoris” were in preparation, without knowing more. It is not the case anymore.
At this time, CD Projekt RED has no further information to provide about the game. Given the early stage of development, don’t expect a trailer or release date anytime soon. The studio, however, promises that this remake will be created with “the utmost care and attention to detail”. Note that like all future projects from the studio, this remake will be based on the Unreal Engine 5, the latest version of Epic’s graphics engine.
“Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on this project is equally exciting, as some of the people working on it have had previous involvement with The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been waiting for this remake, and they know how to make amazing, ambitious games. And while it will be a while before we’re ready to share more about the game, I know the wait is worth it.” said Adam Badowski, studio head of CD Projekt RED.
