The smartphone business isn’t easy and sometimes makes manufacturers give up. Then the customers who still own one of the smartphones are unlucky. That’s not how it should be at LG. The South Korean company has withdrawn from the smartphone business, but there should still be updates.
LG continues to distribute Android updates
LG has been out of the smartphone business for almost exactly a year. The company just didn’t manage to be successful again. That’s why we decided to give up the business. From one day to the next, owners of LG cell phones were in a fix. But now there is good news. There will still be software updates for at least some smartphones. The company differentiates between security updates and new Android versions.
- The LG Q52, LG Velvet and LG Wing will still receive security updates to keep them current and safe to use.
- There should be an update to Android 12 for the LG Q92 5G, V50 ThinQ and V50S ThinQ.
The latter in particular is a real surprise, because actually LG could have simply given up the business completely and let everyone down. But you don’t do that. Even if you have already left the market, at least some smartphones are still supplied with software updates. In South Korea, the rollout is scheduled to take place in the second quarter of 2022 (Source: LG). It remains to be seen whether the updates will also come to Germany.

Motorola takes place from LG
In the USA in particular, LG still had a respectable market share, but this was not enough to be successful worldwide. After LG’s departure, Motorola has taken its place. The Chinese company is arguably the best alternative in the US if you don’t want a smartphone from Apple or Samsung.
