Cell phones around 200 euros in comparison: These are the 5 best smartphones (2023)

Models in comparison

There are many cell phones for around 200 euros. Our comparison tells you which 5 budget smartphones stand out from the crowd.

For 200 euros you can already get many good cell phones that are equipped for almost all everyday tasks. The only time you have to compromise is when taking photos in the dark. Unlike mid-range cell phones starting at 300 euros, you still have to make compromises in this price range. If you choose a model that supports the new 5G mobile communications standard, this will usually come at the expense of other equipment components.

An AMOLED display is no longer included in most models. The same applies the other way around. If you value a colorful display or a large memory, you have to do without 5G. So you have to decide what is most important to you before you buy. Therefore, be sure to check whether your cell phone contract is even 5G capable.

We recommend these models

In December 2023 we tested some smartphones up to 200 euros and compared them with other available models and below we present our five favorites.

Motorola Moto G54

In our opinion, the best option for under 200 euros at the moment is the Motorola Moto G54, which you can often get for just 170 euros. It offers various advantages for this price range. It is one of the fastest smartphones under 200 euros and, at 256 gigabytes, offers up to four times as much memory as other models. The design looks very modern. Another special feature is the support of eSIMs.

The cell phone reveals weaknesses in the camera and software support. Since it is a 5G cell phone, you also have to do without an AMOLED display.

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G

The Galaxy A14 5G is also a good choice. The software support is outstanding for the price range. The phone receives two years of Android updates and four years of security patches. Other devices have to do without updates after half as long.

Solid hardware, long support

Samsung is also expected to sell millions of units of the Galaxy A14 (5G). What speaks in favor of the cell phone are the solid features and the long software support, which is unique at this price…

One drawback is the rather old-fashioned design, and we also found the lack of a power supply included in the scope of delivery negative. The cell phone is also available to buy without 5G support, but since the A14 LTE does not have an AMOLED display, we would recommend the 5G version or you take a look at one of the following models.

Telekom T-Phone 5G

Telekom’s T-Phone is very similar to the Galaxy A14 5G, but looks significantly better – at least from the back. There is also long software support here. With an Android update and three years of security patches, this is a little shorter than with Samsung. Telekom’s 5G cell phone also lacks a power supply in the scope of delivery.

Redmi Note 12 5G

The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi offers a variety of devices in this price segment. We have included the two top sellers Redmi Note 12 5G and Poco M5s in this comparison. Both have an AMOLED display and charge significantly faster with up to 33 watts than the other models in this comparison – however, the Poco M5s does not come with a power supply included.

The Redmi Note 12 5G offers the larger and faster display in comparison. It measures 6.67 inches and displays content at up to 120 Hertz. Another special feature: the device is the only model in this comparison to combine 5G and an AMOLED panel in one device. To be fair, it is rarely on offer for less than 200 euros – mostly on eBay. Xiaomi also promises an update. The phone is expected to receive Android 14 and security patches by 2026.

This is what you need to pay attention to when buying a cell phone under 200 euros

As mentioned at the beginning, there are countless cell phones in the price range up to 200 euros. If you are considering a model other than those listed here, you should pay particular attention to the following things:

  • Find out when the model went on sale. Older cell phones are often offered in this price range. Since the software support, which is already often poor in this price range, expires even more quickly, we would recommend buying a cell phone from 2023.
  • Asks whether there is an NFC chip on board. This is required for paying with your cell phone. Not every cell phone offers such a chip in this price range.
  • The device memory should be at least 64 gigabytes, preferably 128 gigabytes, and be expandable.
  • At least Android 13 should be used as the operating system.
  • Keep an eye on the prices. These are very volatile, especially in the price range up to 200 euros, and with a little patience you can save up to 50 euros when purchasing them. We have listed current smartphone offers up to 200 euros below.
