UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United Nations on Friday called on parties to a deal for the resumption of Ukrainian grain exports from Black Sea ports reached under its aegis to renew it before it expires at the end of November.
The UN explained that this agreement was necessary to ensure global food security, and called for a related agreement to ensure that cereals and fertilizers from Russia be implemented.
“We underscore the urgency of (extending the agreement) in order to contribute to global food security, and lessen the suffering that the cost of living crisis is inflicting on billions of people,” the spokesperson said. of the organization, Stéphane Dujarric.
Under the agreement reached in July, Ukraine was able to resume grain and fertilizer exports from its Black Sea ports, which were halted after the February 24 Russian invasion.
The UN is seeking to extend the deal for another year and facilitate joint inspections of the ships by officials from the UN, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine.
A UN spokeswoman said on Monday that “urgent” action was needed to allow the passage of more than 150 ships affected by the Ukrainian export deal from Black Sea ports, to catch up the backlog accumulated in recent months.
