CES 2022 – A new Oled EX panel even brighter at LG Display

LG Display, manufacturer of the panels that equip all Oled televisions on the market, has just announced the release of a new Oled EX version even brighter than the Oled Evo model of 2021.

LG Display was already providing TV manufacturers with a brighter Oled Evo panel last year. This model had found its place in a few references such as the LG 65G1, the Sony Bravia A90J or the Philips 55OLED936. Our measurements showed that the peak brightness was indeed up, but not yet enough to overshadow the Panasonic TX-65JZ2000 and its Oled Professional Edition panel equipped with a home cooling system designed by the engineers of the firm. The maximum brightness of the Evo panel teases the 800 cd / m² on the LG G1 and Sony A90J, and even reaches 824 cd / m² on the Philips OLED936, but this is still quite far from the 962 cd / m² of the Panasonic model.

In 2022, LG Display is therefore marketing an Oled EX panel (for Evolution and eXperience) which combines the use of deuterium and a new algorithm making it possible to very finely manage the energy of the 33 million Oled pixels (for an 8K panel). LG Display thus announces a gain in brightness of up to 30%. Last year, LG Display claimed a gain of up to 20% for its Oled Evo panel, a much lower value in practice. Hopefully this Oled EX panel will bring a real gain in brightness, at least to compete with the Panasonic models.

The Oled EX panel does not just bring a gain in brightness. It also makes it possible to reduce the screen edges since the border goes from 6 mm to 4 mm for a 65-inch model. It should be found among manufacturers of Oled televisions such as Sony, Philips and obviously LG Electronics, which will probably be the first to unveil a model with this novelty.

It remains to be seen the reaction of Samsung Display, which should offer its first QD-Oled panels to manufacturers at the beginning of this year. Remember that the QD-Oled technology developed by Samsung uses blue organic diodes (Oled) to excite quantum dots and thus obtain more saturated colors. In theory, QD-Oled TVs would benefit from the advantages of Oled technology with individual pixel control, thus infinite contrast while increasing maximum brightness and color space coverage thanks to quantum dots. We would also keep the wider viewing angles of the Oled and the instantaneous response time.
