CES 2023 – AMD Radeon RX 7000 GPUs attack laptops

CES in Las Vegas is the occasion for many launches for giants like AMD, which has just announced not only its new Ryzen 7000 desktop and mobile processors, but also its Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards for laptops. These announcements therefore follow those of Nvidia, which presented its mobile RTX 40s with great fanfare, with the desktop RTX 4070 Ti in parallel. Note however that on the AMD side, no new desktop GPU has been exposed: you will have to be content with the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX released in December.

On a laptop, however, we will not be entitled to the same references since AMD has only unveiled four models: two M series models and two S series models intended for ultrathin computers. Finally, little information was revealed by AMD. The Radeon RX 7600M XT and RX 7600M aim for Full HD gaming, and while they retain the RX 6600M’s 8GB of vRAM, performance is up significantly over the previous generation, with gains of around 30% according to Games.

AMD didn’t provide any info on the RX 7600S, but the 7700S appears to deliver a similar level of performance to the 7600M XT despite having a limited thermal envelope of 100W. compare…

In any case, they will obviously have to be put in front of the RTX 40, which promise to be very efficient, and AMD has only allowed itself a comparison with the RTX 3060 desktop, which are honestly not the most interesting. Also, most of the graphs seem to display the results in rasterization, and we would have liked to have more info on raytracing. In the end, therefore, we know very little about these mobile GPUs, which may bode some disappointment.

Several manufacturers will work hand in hand with AMD to offer Advantage Edition PCs (equipped with both AMD processors and graphics cards), including Alienware and its recently presented M16 and M18, or Asus with its TUF A16. It remains to be seen whether the PCs with these GPUs will be up to the game, which we will be sure to check over the next few months.
