CES 2023 – LG Oled M3: an Oled TV with wireless connectivity

Taking advantage of CES 2023, LG has just unveiled its first television with remote wireless connectivity. The LG Oled Signature 97M3 thus has no connections on the television itself. There is only a simple power cable to operate its slab. All the connections are deported in an external box called Zero Connect Box. LG uses a proprietary wireless transmission technology that allows a 4K 120 Hz signal to pass without loss of quality and without lag. LG has developed an algorithm that instantly identifies the best transmission path in space. For example, it can recognize changes in the immediate environment — like people or animals moving around the room — and change its path accordingly. The algorithm also helps to minimize transmission errors and interruptions. Plus, for maximum signal strength, the box antenna can be easily rotated or tilted to align with the TV location.

The HDMI 2.1 connector is compatible with all features such as 4K 120 Hz, eARC, ALLM or even FreeSync and G-Sync. On the box, we can see three HDMI 2.1 inputs, two USB ports, a digital audio output, an Ethernet port and the antenna for receiving television via the airwaves or satellite. According to LG, the display delay is equivalent to that of a conventional television, without further details. It is not yet known whether this model will be able to display a display delay of less than 10 ms, which is the case on LG Oled televisions from last year (LG 65C2, LG 65G2).

Remember, however, that LG is not the first manufacturer to offer remote connectivity in a wireless box. In 2009, the Sony 40ZX1 television was already using an external wireless box in order to offer a sleek design. This concept of wireless box is also taken up on the Sony Bravia 46EX1, the ancestor of Samsung’s The Frame, which we tested the same year.

In terms of design, the LG M3 is very similar to the LG 65G2 and the G3 from 2023. It comes with an invisible wall bracket that allows the TV to be completely pressed against the wall. This model should not use the new Oled META panel with its billions of microlenses, which is currently reserved for the LG G3.

The LG Signature Oled 97M3 TV will only be available in a 97-inch version and logically looks very expensive. Indeed, the LG 97G2 is currently sold for around €25,000. The LG 97M3 – in the much higher-end Signature range – should sell for at least €30,000.
