At CES 2023, Samsung unveiled a prototype of its 8K ultra short throw projector, a world first. This model, baptized The Premiere 8K, uses a light source composed of three red, green and blue lasers which avoid the rainbow effect and obtain a very high luminosity of 4000 lumens. This model projects a 150 inch (about 3.8 meter) image with only 31 cm set back from the wall.

However, it is impossible to know the nature of the display chip used. We believe it’s an Ultra HD native Texas Instruments DLP chip that uses the famous 240Hz wobbling technique to display four Ultra HD images side-by-side to form a native 8K Ultra image at 60Hz. , this 8K XPR DLP chip has not yet been announced by Texas Instruments. Samsung could also use a 4K D-ILA chip from JVC with e-Shift technology to quickly shift pixels and therefore display a native 8K image. Samsung does not provide further information on this.

With the light on, the image remains as visible as ever. Proof that the 4000 lumens are present.

The audio part is also neat, with an integrated 5.1 system using sound projection to use the screen as a reflection system. The goal is for the viewer to hear the sound coming out of the screen rather than the projector. The Premiere 8K was otherwise tucked away in a huge enclosure, but the size of the projector itself is closer to Samsung’s The Premiere LSPT9, the tri-laser Ultra HD version we’ve already tested.

Samsung has not released a release date or price for this 8K Ultra Short Throw Laser projector. The Premiere 8K remains for the moment a technological demonstration and it will probably be necessary to wait until the end of the year, or even next year for its marketing.
