CES 2023 – TCL formalizes the NXTPAPER 12 Pro, a large tablet with an original screen

Make way for a bigger model! After being confined to a maximum of 10 inches, TCL released its first tablet equipped with a 12.2-inch panel. A product that is not to be outdone, since it also hosts NXTPAPER technology, promising a screen rendering close to paper.

Mid-range that stands out

The first visuals of this new tablet are promising. Sitting in the middle range, the NXTPAPER 12 Pro features a simple yet effective appearance. The back cover seems to benefit from a grainy finish, as drawing paper can. A nice reference to the name of the tablet. It also weighs 599 g. Far from being the lightest on the market, it nevertheless displays a relatively contained weight for a model adopting a slab of more than 12 inches.

This screen, precisely, has a 2K definition (2160 x 1440 pixels) and sports a 3:2 format. The light peak is announced at 327 nits – which is not the highest we have seen. For the screen refresh, you will have to settle for 60 Hz. Which is a bit of a shame when TCL seems to be dedicating its product to creative and entertainment uses. Especially since with the NXTPAPER technology, which offers a rendering close to paper and promises to protect the user from eye fatigue, it is logically aimed at readers as well as drawing enthusiasts. An electronic stylus support is also on the program. It supports 8192 pressure points and, combined with the panel, it should offer the feeling of scribbling on paper.

To propel everything, we find the MediaTek MT8771 chip that can already be found in the Tab 10s 5G from the same company. The SoC is paired with 8 GB of RAM as well as 256 GB of storage. Thanks to its large size, it can afford to carry an 8000 mAh battery with fast charging at 18 W. In the photo, TCL put on the back a single 13 megapixel module. On the front, however, TCL offers two modules that display 8 megapixels.

The TCL NXTPAPER 12 Pro is already available in the United States and will be released a little later in Europe. The launch price is announced at $499. A 5G version is also expected to arrive in the coming months, with a price tag set at $549.
