CES 2024 Day 2: the 8 innovations worth a look

CES 2024 is still in full swing, and new announcements were made on the second day of the biggest tech show of the year. And since this is the largest show, we know that not everyone will be able to attend the hundreds of announcements made by the more than 4,000 exhibitors.

ZDNET has filtered through all that noise to bring you the most important announcements and products from day two that you may have missed (and for day 1 it’s here: CES 2024 Day 1: The 10 products that have us more impressed). We were even able to get our hands on some of these products below.

1. New features for Android devices

Android users will appreciate the many announcements made by Google during the second day of CES. The biggest feature coming to Android devices next month is a solution called Quick Share.

Quick Share will allow peer-to-peer sharing of content between all types of devices equipped with Android OS, such as smartphones and even Chromebooks.

Other new features and updates include expanded support for Fast Pair, improved streaming capabilities to more apps and devices (including TikTok), and integration of Android Auto in more vehicles.

2. Nanoleaf’s impressive smart lighting

Nanoleaf's new Orchestrator software

Nanoleaf

Connected lighting company Nanoleaf has announced some exciting additions to its lighting lineup, including new Orchestrator software for music integrations.

The software connects directly to a computer’s sound source and isolates the response to the device, allowing the lights to respond to precise layers of an audio track.

The Nanoleaf Skylight was also presented. This is a set of square light panels intended to be installed on the ceiling and capable of emitting 1,400 lumens per square. Other products announced include multi-colored outdoor string lights with Matter standard support.

3. The portable power station for the whole home or office from EcoFlow

The EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra generator has been recognized as a 2024 CES Innovation Awards winner thanks to its impressive features.

These include a power capacity of 6 kWh (an entire house), an output of 7200 W and a solar input of 5.6 kW. The system is also compatible with expansion packs, allowing power generation capacity to be increased up to 90 kWh. Enough to power the essential devices in your home for… an entire month.

ZDNET’s Maria Diaz got to try out this incredible power bank at home and called it the “Swiss Army knife of home backup systems,” adding that it’s also a “very quiet solution, which the you don’t even hear it when it is less than 2000 W”.

4. Android’s answer to the Apple Watch’s double-tap feature

Double point

The Wow Mouse app was designed for Android smartwatches to act as an extension of the smartwatch, allowing you to control the technology around you via Bluetooth with a simple wave of your hand.

It’s a bit like Apple’s Double-Tap feature on the Apple Watch.

But instead of controlling things on the watch itself, Wow Mouse goes a step further and lets users turn their connected lights on or off or turn down the volume of a speaker.

5. A battery that charges your phone in seconds

Swapery

The CES aims to show technology that provides solutions. And this external smartphone battery from Swappery solves the problem of a dead battery in just… seven seconds.

Here’s how it works: When your smartphone runs out of battery, place it in the Swapery Station, wait seven seconds, then remove it to get a new battery that will last you about 8 to 10 hours, according to data from the business.

Although it’s not the most conventional charger, it could allow you to get a fully charged battery without the need for any other cables, adapters or plugs.

6. Lenovo’s hybrid laptop

Lenovo hybrid 2-in-1 device

Lenovo/ZDNET

Lenovo announced the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid during the second day of CES. And it’s impressive for two reasons. First of all, it is a 2-in-1 device that can be a laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, or a touchscreen tablet with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ processor.

Second, it switches between Windows and Android seamlessly, depending on which mode you choose (tablet or laptop).

Each component of this hybrid device even has its own battery. It’ll cost you $1,999, but you’re really getting a separate tablet and laptop for that price.

7. An AI gadget that interacts with apps so you don’t have to

Rabbit R1

June Wan/ZDNET

Rabbit is going back to basics at CES 2024 with its Rabbit R1 device that wants to replace your smartphone when it comes to using apps.

The small gadget fits in the palm of your hand and uses AI to see and learn how a user interacts with their smartphone apps and web experiences, then replicates them (upon verbal request) on a personalized cloud platform.

Enough to solve smartphone addiction. Rabbit explains that some of the popular apps you can request from R1 include Spotify, Apple Music, DoorDash, Uber, Amazon, and more.

8. Amazon launches Matter Casting

Amazon Echo Show 15

Amazon

Amazon is taking a leaf from Apple and Google by introducing a new way to stream videos from your smartphones and tablets directly to supported Amazon devices.

Called Matter Casting, it now lets you stream Prime Video content to the Echo Show 15. Support for Fire TV devices, including TVs with Fire TV built-in, will launch in the coming months, and Amazon added that it hopes adding Matter Casting features to services like Plex, Pluto TV, Sling TV, STARZ, and more later this year.

Unlike Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast, Amazon’s Matter Casting uses the Matter protocol so that connected home devices from different brands can work together more seamlessly.
