César 2022 nominations: Illusions lost, Annette and Aline go first

With 15 nominations, Lost Illusions by Xavier Giannoli is the favorite of the Césars in 2022. Annette by Leos Carax and Aline by Valérie Lemercier come second and third among the most cited films.

Roger Arpajou – Curiosa Films – Gaumont

Lost Illusions by Xavier Giannoli is the favorite. It is this adaptation of Balzac which is in the lead with 15 nominations, followed by Annette by Leos Carax (11 nominations) and Aline by Valérie Lemercier (10 nominations). Bac Nord, La Fracture, Boite noire, The Olympiads, The event, Onoda and Titane follow.

These 15 nominations for one and the same film constitute a record. Until now, the greatest number of nominations was 13, in particular for Subway by Luc Besson in 1986, and more recently The Things that one says, the things that one does last year. Xavier Giannoli had, in the past, already collected a high number of nominations with in particular Originally (10 nominations in 2010) or Marguerite (6 nominations in 2016).

Who are the absent and forgotten?

If we had to pick out a few surprises and trends, we can say that these nominations make room for a great diversity of genres and thus give an idea of the richness of French cinema. Apart from pure comedy, eternally forgotten at the ceremony, almost all genres are there (costume film, horror, thriller, action, drama, war film, biopic, adaptation of a novel, adaptation of a true story and even rock opera!). Let us specify all the same that there is comedy in Aline, Lost Illusions or La Fracture, but without being its main genre.

Overall, these nominations also give pride of place to popular successes such as North ferry, Aline and Black Boxall three millionaires, but also lost illusions at the gates of a million admissions.

On the absent side, just as in 2021, we can note the absence of some big names accustomed to nominations, such as Marion Cotillard (for Annette), Catherine Deneuve (for In her lifetime), Sophie Marceau (for Everything went well) or even Vincent Lindon (for Titanium). For Titane, we can also be surprised that it does not appear in the best film category when it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes last July.

These nominations are in any case the reflection of some of the films already awarded this year, such as Titane precisely (with 4 nominations, including best director for Julia Ducournau) and The event, Golden Lion in Venice, and 4 nominations as well. The films selected at Cannes are once again strongly represented. Everything went well by François Ozon, in competition at Cannes in 2021, surprisingly does not receive any nominations. Ditto for Bergman Island by Mia Hansen Love.

See you on February 25 to find out the winners

For the record, the 47th ceremony will take place on February 25, 2022, presented by Antoine de Caunes, and chaired by director Danièle Thompson. Actress Cate Blanchett will receive an honorary Cesar. The evening will be broadcast live on CANAL+.
