César 2022: records, novelties, forgotten… 5 things to know about the ceremony

Figures, new and forgotten… Here are 5 things to know about the 47th edition of the Césars which will be held on February 25 and whose nominations were announced this morning.

Canal+

As in 2021, it is again an extraordinary edition that is announced for the César ceremony, with a lower number of eligible short and feature films than previous editions. 171 films were in the running, released between the reopening of French theaters at the end of May 2021 and December 31 (compared to 125 in 2021).

A record is nevertheless already established, in this case the number of nominations for the same film! Lost Illusions, which is therefore the favorite, totals no less than 15 citations, exceeding the record of 13 reached in particular by Les Choses qu’on dit, les choses qu’on fait by Emmanuel Mouret last year.

While waiting for the 47th ceremony which will take place on February 25, 2022, broadcast unencrypted and live on CANAL +, myCANAL and Europe 1, here are 5 things to know.

2 additional Caesars

Two more Césars will be awarded this year, bringing the number of categories to 25. Visual effects will be rewarded for the very first time in the history of the Césars, and the best documentary short film is making a comeback (it existed from 1977 to 1991, before being deleted).

It is not uncommon for categories to be created or deleted. We can cite, for example, these categories that no longer exist today: Best film from the European Union, Best poster or even, more surprisingly, Best advertising film! More recently, the César du public, the creation of which had caused a stir, ceased to be awarded last year.

The César for high school students is perpetuated: the 7 films nominated for the César for Best Film will also be submitted to the vote of 1,866 high school students for the César des Lycéens.

Antoine De Caunes, master of ceremonies record holder!

From Caunes, 10th! If we take into account the 2022 ceremony, Antoine de Caunes is the personality who has presented the Cesar ceremony the most times. Until now, this record was held by Pierre Tchernia, either alone at the helm or in tandem.

The premiere of Antoine de Caunes in the costume of master of ceremonies dates back to 1996, the year which saw the coronation of La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz. He then presented, in succession, the 1997, 1998 and 1999 editions. He took over the orders almost 10 years later, in 2008 and 2009, then from 2011 to 2013.

Note that in 1999, Antoine de Caunes was simultaneously nominated for the César for best actor for The man is a woman like the others. It was ultimately Jacques Villeret who won for Le Dîner de cons.

From Titane to L’Événement, a look back at an exceptional year for French women directors

2021, year of female directors?

Did the exemplary careers of Julia Ducournau with Titane (Palme d’or at Cannes) and Audrey Diwan with L’Événement (Lion d’or at Venice) have an effect on the number of female nominations?

Without really achieving parity, the number of female directors cited in the best film (3 out of 7) and best direction (3 out of 7) categories is nevertheless particularly high this year. It is in any case much better than the years 2021 and 2020 which had only one director in these categories (namely Caroline Vignal [Antoinette dans les Cévennes] and Maiwenn [ADN] for last year).

It is surprising, however, that Titanium does not appear in the best film category. And conversely that La Fracture is cited for best film, but not Catherine Corsini for its staging.

The forgotten

On the absent side, just as in 2021, we can note the absence of some big names such as Marion Cotillard (for Annette), Marina Foïs (for La Fracture), Catherine Deneuve (for De son vivant), Sophie Marceau (for Tout s’ went well) or André Dussolier (for Everything went well) and Vincent Lindon (for Titanium). Too bad not to have nominated Théo Christine in the revelation category jointly with his partner Sandor Funtek, tandem of Suprêmes, biopic of NTM.

Everything went well from François Ozon, in competition at Cannes in 2021, surprisingly does not receive any nominations. Ditto for Bergman Island by Mia Hansen Love. The two French films in competition at the Berlinale 2021, Albatross by Xavier Beauvois and Petite Maman by Céline Sciamma, are also absent (Céline Sciamma is however named as co-screenwriter of Olympiades by Jacques Audiard).

Finally, note the only nomination of Benedetta for Virginie Efira in best actress. For the record, Elle, the previous feature film by Paul Verhoeven, received 9 nominations and won 2 statuettes, including that of best film.

The stars already announced

Cate Blanchett will receive an honorary Cesar for her entire career. She is currently playing Nightmare Alley by Guillermo del Toro, and on Netflix, Don’t Look Up by Adam McKay. It succeeds the Splendid troupe, which collectively received this award in 2021.

As for the presidency, it was entrusted to screenwriter and director Danièle Thompson.

Who will succeed Adieu les cons by Albert Dupontel, big winner of the César 2021? Answer in a month.
