Chadwick Boseman: First look at his last film

"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" hits Netflix on December 18th. Now the trailer for Chadwick Boseman's last film is here.

The streaming service Netflix has released the trailer for the last film by the late actor Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020). "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" is traded as an Oscar contender: The "Black Panther" star, who died in August at the age of 43, could posthumously receive the most important film award in the world for his performance.

The film tells the story of the "mother of the blues", Ma Rainey, played by Viola Davis (55, "Fences"), and her struggle with her white management in the 1920s when she recorded an album at the end of her career. Boseman plays the ambitious trumpeter Levee. "I don't want to compete with Chadwick's mother, but he was my baby," said Viola Davis in an interview about the actor about the film. She had already played his mother in "Get On Up" (2014). "Chadwick was an artist. That's what he was …" said Davis.

Colleagues on the set knew nothing of Boseman's illness

Boseman died of colon cancer in August while the film was in post-production. He is said to have not informed his colleagues about his illness during the filming. "When I look back, he always seemed tired," Davis said, according to the New York Times. The actor had an incredible team that looked after him, "and I now realize that they have done everything so that he can continue and work at his high level. And he has."

"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" will be released on Netflix on December 18th. This year Boseman was already seen in Spike Lee's (63) film "Da 5 Bloods", a role that could also earn him a posthumous Oscar nomination.
