  • The ZSC Lions fail in the round of 16 second leg of the Champions Hockey League because of Skelleftea’s power play.
  • Freiburg overtook Jukurit Mikkelin out in the 2nd minute of extra time.
  • HCD’s 2-2 draw at Tappara Tampere isn’t enough to progress.

In the Champions Hockey League, Swiss hopes rest on EV Zug. The Central Swiss will play their round of 16 second leg against Munich on Wednesday. After the 5-1 away win a week ago, progress for the Swiss champions should only be a matter of form.

For the ZSC Lions, Fribourg-Gottéron and HC Davos, however, the dream of reaching the quarter-finals is over. All 3 teams were eliminated despite promising first leg results.

Freiburg – Jukurit Mikkelin 1:2 aet (first leg 1:1)

1-1 in the first leg in Finland, 1-1 in the second leg in Freiburg. Overtime had to decide between Fribourg-Gottéron and Jukurit Mikkelin. And there were almost 2 minutes played at 3 against 3 when the guests were able to counterattack. Patrik Puistola and Jarrko Immonen attacked the Freiburg goal in pairs, only Benoît Jecker and goalie Connor Hughes stood in their way. Ultimately unsuccessful. Puistola put the ball perfectly across to Immonen, who knocked Gottéron out of the competition.

ZSC Lions 1-4 Skelleftea (1st leg 4-5)

Skelleftea’s outstanding power play meant the ZSC Lions were out of the round of 16. From the first 3 superiority situations, the Swedes generated 3 hits to lead 3:1 after 2 periods. The best goal of the evening, however, came from Zurich: Chris Baltisberger completed a wonderful power play combination in the 31st minute to make it 1:2 in the meantime. Skelleftea’s 4th goal fell into the empty goal. In the first leg between these two teams, 7 of the 9 goals were scored by the special teams.

Tappara Tampere 2-2 Davos (1-0 first leg)

Two goals from Nati player Enzo Corvi were not enough for HCD to advance to the quarter-finals against the Finns from Tappara Tampere. The 1:0 marked Corvi from the slot (39th). At 2: 2, the center escaped outnumbered and defeated Tappara goalie Christian Heljanko wonderfully between the legs (49th). In between, however, Davos conceded two goals within 24 seconds in the 45th minute. The strong Heljanko didn’t allow a 3rd HCD goal in the final minutes, which would have resulted in an overtime.
