Champions League: Frenchman Clément Turpin will referee the final between Liverpool and Real Madrid

This is a great first for 36 years. Clément Turpin was appointed this Wednesday by UEFA to referee the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool on May 28 at the Stade de France.

Four years ago, he was the 4th referee in the C1 final which had already opposed the Spanish and English club with the victory of the Madrid team (3-1). This time, Clément Turpin, who will celebrate his 40th birthday on May 16, will be on the whistle to lead this long-awaited meeting. He will become the sixth Frenchman to referee a final of the most prestigious of the European Cups. The last was Michel Vautrot in 1986.

But this is not the first time that he will lead a European final. International referee since 2010, he had already officiated last season during the Europa League final won on penalties by Villarreal against Manchester United. Already a final between a Spanish and English team…

In Saint-Denis, Clément Turpin will be accompanied by his compatriots and Ligue 1 referees Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore, as assistants, and by Benoît Bastien, as fourth referee. Jérôme Brisard will be in the VAR, assisted by another Frenchman Willy Delajod, as well as the Italians Massimiliano Irrati and Filippo Meli.

“This is excellent news for French refereeing, which is progressing from year to year in the international hierarchy. Our referees are now present at every major competition,” welcomed the president of the FFF Noël Le Graët, in a press release.
