Champions League playoffs – No goals in heated match between YB and Maccabi Haifa – Sport

  • In the first leg of the Champions League playoffs, YB secured a goalless draw away at Maccabi Haifa.
  • In a balanced and intense game, there aren’t any great chances to score.
  • The second leg will take place next Tuesday at Wankdorf in Bern.

The Bernese Young Boys have secured a good starting position for the second leg away from Maccabi Haifa. In the atmospheric Sammy Ofer Stadium, the two teams neutralized each other as much as possible, there were no real chances to score – so even after the final whistle the performance-oriented 0:0 was on the scoreboard.

The Swiss champions dominated the game in the Israeli coastal city and also recorded more offensive actions. Kastriot Imeri with a free kick (5th) and Filip Ugrinic (36th) could only try from a distance. Both times the ball just missed the target.

No shot on goal

After the change of sides, it was twice Fabian Rieder who attacked. But it wasn’t really dangerous either. After 90 minutes, the Bernese remained without a single shot on the opposing goal.

YB goalie Anthony Racioppi, on the other hand, had to intervene once. At the end of the Tjarron Chery after a good 25 minutes, the 24-year-old had a bit of trouble, but then he held on safely.

Lauper back again

YB trainer Raphael Wicky had already surprised with his line-up. In midfield, Sandro Lauper made his comeback after injuring himself in the cup final. Last Saturday, the 26-year-old was still playing with the Bernese U21s in the Promotion League in Biel – now he’s back on the big football stage.

Here’s how to proceed

With the 0-0, YB still has every chance of moving into the Champions League group stage. Because YB’s Super League game against Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy, which was scheduled for Saturday, was postponed, the Bernese have enough time to recover for the second leg. This takes place on Tuesday from 9:00 p.m. in Wankdorf.
