Champions League: Round of 16 – Liverpool clinches late win over Inter Milan – Sport

  • Liverpool wins the round of 16 first leg away against Inter Milan 2-0.
  • The two goals only fall in the final quarter of an hour, Firmino and Salah redeem the “Reds”.
  • In the second game on Wednesday evening, RB Salzburg drew against Bayern Munich.

Liverpool keep a clean sheet in the Champions League. After the flawless group stage with 6 wins, Jürgen Klopp’s team also wins the round of 16 first leg against Inter Milan. Until the victory in the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium was a fact, the “Reds” had to be patient and even tremble.

With the score at 0:0, the Italians started the second half much better and put the pressure on. In the best final position, they missed the ball several times by just one toe. The only time the ball landed in the goal, Edin Dzeko’s supposed goal was taken back because it was clearly offside (60′).

Only then did Liverpool come back into the game. In the 75th minute, Roberto Firmino broke the ban after a corner kick, cleverly extended with his head and scored the 1-0 slightly against the flow of the game.

Inter wasn’t able to react after that, on the contrary. Mohamed Salah was able to make it 2-0 for the English side after a ball that was not cleared properly in the penalty area (83′).

Inter with crossbar

The game started extremely lively and with more exciting scenes than in the second half. Both Inter and Liverpool were looking for the way forward, overall the English had the advantages on their side.

Hakan Calhanoglu caught the attention of the Milanese with a crossbar hit (16′), in addition to this big chance, the guests mostly caused danger. First, a direct acceptance by Thiago only landed on the goal net (9th), then Sadio Mané sinned twice: in the 14th minute his header just missed the goal, and in the 23rd minute the Senegalese tried an acrobatically overhead kick – but only hit the outside network.

After this 7th CL victory in a row, Liverpool have the better cards for the second leg at Anfield Road. But Inter will be motivated on March 8th to take revenge for this defeat that is not necessary and still reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2011.
