Tottenham Hotspur was actually required. After the 0-1 draw in the round of 16 first leg against AC Milan, the English had to deliver at home and score goals. Only: Antonio Conte’s team was practically without any goal threat and that over 90 minutes.
At the same time, thanks to their cushion, the Milanese were not under offensive pressure and accordingly showed little. The result: 0-0 and a game without highlights. As a result, Milan have reached the quarter-finals of the “premier class” for the first time in 11 years.
Highlight only in injury time
The best scenes of the duel in London only took place in injury time. At first, Harry Kane was free to head the ball, but was denied by goalie Mike Maignan who reacted strongly. In a direct counterattack, the shot from Milan’s Divock Origi could only be stopped from the post.
Previously, the home team had hardly created any chances and if they did, then no compelling ones. As time was running out, Pierre-Emil Höjbjerg at least posed some danger with a powerful shot (64′). A little later it was star striker Kane, who headed past the goal after a cross (68th).
Tottenham without ideas
Not much more came from Premier League fourth-placed against Serie A fourth-placed. Even before the break, the game had mainly taken place between the two penalty areas, Junior Messias had the best (half) chances after a sophisticated free kick variant (18th) and Kane on the other side for Tottenham with a deflected shot (35th).
The last hopes for the “Spurs” actually disappeared in the 77th minute when Cristian Romero was sent off with yellow-red after an overly hard start.
In the end, Milan was able to celebrate progress without much effort and without much trembling. The quarter-final draw will take place on March 17th. Meanwhile, at Tottenham, the 2019 CL finalists, you have to go over the books.
