  • Liverpool showed no trouble in the semi-final first leg of the Champions League with Villarreal and won 2-0.
  • The English made the difference with two goals shortly after the break. First, Pervis Estupinan steers into his own goal, then Sadio Mané scores.
  • The Spaniards, on the other hand, remain pale on Anfield Road and don’t get any compelling goal scenes.

It was the right words that Jürgen Klopp had found in the Liverpool dressing room at the break. Although his team was already dominant in the first half, apart from a shot by Thiago Alcantara (43rd), they didn’t have any compelling chances to score. This changed after the change of sides.

Liverpool’s power quarter hour

Between the 50th and 65th minute, the “Reds” were allowed to celebrate four times, but the hosts only scored their goals twice in accordance with the rules:

  • 50 minutes: After a corner, defender Virgil Van Dijk puts the ball on for Fabinho, who takes the lead. However, because the Dutch defender is offside, the goal rightly doesn’t count.
  • 53 minutes: Three minutes later, the lead is a fact. Pervis Estupinan unhappily deflected a cross from Jordan Henderson, goalie Geronimo Rulli is still on the ball but can no longer prevent the 0:1.
  • 55 minutes: A co-production by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané closes the Senegalese callous with the toe to 2:0.
  • 65 minutes: Andy Robertson marks Liverpool’s next goal from offside. The Scot’s hit after a cross consequently does not count.

Despite the two goals denied, the “Reds” should be satisfied with the 2-0 lead from the first leg. They practically dominated the game at will and showed the guests the limits for the first time in this knockout phase. With high pressure, Jürgen Klopp’s team undermined any offensive intentions of the “yellow submarine” early on and thus pulled the tooth out of him.

Disappointing geeks

During their guest performance on the island, the eastern Spaniards also missed their pleasant counterattack, which had helped them to a coup against Juventus and Bayern Munich. Already in the first half, Villarreal was only rarely able to lure the favorites out of their reserve with quick switching games. After the devastating quarter of an hour at the beginning of the second half, the outsider never recovered.

Villarreal’s giant killer skills are in demand more than ever in the second leg (3.5.) in front of a home crowd, should the Emery team still manage to turn things around. However, it wouldn’t be the first time Villarreal has surprised the European footballing world in the ongoing CL campaign.
