It was only a few months ago that the Chancellor had to wear an eye patch due to an accident and became an internet meme. Now the next mishap: Scholz injured his chin while shaving. This is not the first time either.

When the Chancellor comes to visit, he is inevitably the center of attention. But this time it is the Chancellor’s chin in particular that attracts attention. Olaf Scholz appears at the on-site meeting at the International Police Cooperation Center in Neuss (IPCC) with a clearly visible plaster on his chin – and people there wonder what has happened to the Chancellor.

The day before, Scholz had met with the EU heads of state and government in Brussels to discuss the new appointments to top EU posts. Negotiations lasted less time than expected, meaning that Scholz arrived in Neuss at 12 noon instead of in the afternoon as planned. However, there was no physical confrontation between the heads of government, it was joked on the sidelines of the meeting.

The Chancellor’s delegation preempted further rumours and clarified the matter: Scholz had simply cut himself while shaving. The same mishap happened to Scholz last September. Back then, he was also visibly wearing a plaster on his face in New York. He had only just removed an eye patch after he had suffered scratches on his face in a jogging accident.

During the visit to the IPCC, the pavement was quickly replaced by factual issues. The facility is the police situation center during the European Football Championship, and 300 police officers from all participating countries are organizing the security of the major event from there. Scholz had NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul show him everything and spoke to police officers. “This is a great achievement that is being accomplished here,” said the otherwise impeccably shaven Chancellor.
