Change in SPD leadership: Stegner sees Esken with Klingbeil at the top

Change in SPD leadership
Stegner sees Esken with a cleaver at the head

On Monday, the SPD wants to provide clarity about the future party leadership. Ralf Stegner is already making a prognosis as to who will form the new leadership duo and is counting on the unity of the comrades. For this wish he gets a tailwind from the northeast.

The SPD politician Ralf Stegner expects party leader Saskia Esken and Secretary General Lars Klingbeil to form the future leadership duo of the Social Democrats. “I assume that it will come that way,” said the former party vice president on Deutschlandfunk. Esken said she wanted to run again. And Klingbeil was responsible for a very successful election campaign. The previous co-chairman Norbert Walter-Borjans does not want to run again. The SPD wants to clarify its future party leadership this Monday. Esken and Walter-Borjans wanted to submit a proposal for this to the board.

At the same time, Stegner emphasized that the party leadership does not consist of just two people. There is a strong parliamentary group, very popular prime ministers and others like the Jusos who spoke up. “There is a lot of strength there,” said Stegner, who was elected to the Bundestag in September. The 62-year-old, who belongs to the left wing of the party, also called on his party to support a future government led by it. He is someone who wants to ensure that the SPD stays alive, but at the same time stands united and in solidarity with the government. A self-destruction course is not recommended to the party.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s SPD state chairman Manuela Schwesig is likely to think similarly. In the past few days, the Prime Minister was under discussion as a possible new federal chairman, but according to a report by the radio station “Ostseewelle” on Friday, she is not planning a candidacy at the SPD party conference in early December. One day after Esken declared that he wanted to run again, Schwesig told the broadcaster: “It is good that Saskia Esken has clarified the situation and is running again. I support a dual leadership with her and Lars Klingbeil, who heralds the generation change. ” She enjoys working with both of them.

When asked whether Schwesig wanted to run at least for a deputy post, she told the broadcaster: “As Prime Minister, I can represent the interests of our state at federal level at any time and participate in important decisions. I will continue to do so in the future.” Schwesig resigned from the Federal SPD in September 2019 because of cancer. Before that, she had been deputy federal chairwoman of her party since 2009 and has even been acting chairwoman in the meantime.
